Ice Climbing & Courses- with a mountain guide
Valmalenco is celebrated as one of the premier ice climbing destinations in the Central Alps.
The valley boasts an extraordinary concentration of great ice falls, providing opportunities that span from single pitch “ice crags” perfect for technique practice, to long challenging multi-pitch routes.
The optimal ice climbing season generally runs from December to February, contingent upon stable freezing conditions.
Ice Climbing Paradise
The diverse terrain across Valmalenco is typically divided into two main areas: San Giuseppe-Chiareggio and Campo Franscia-Lanzada.
The Campo Franscia-Lanzada area, serves as an excellent base for training and base courses, featuring accessible walls like Cinese or Castello, for single-pitch practice and shorter approaches.
In contrast, the San Giuseppe-Chiareggio area hosts the valley’s longest and most classic routes, offering an open, high-mountain feel. For intermediate and more advance climbers, routes like the elegant Cascate del Vazzeda, the extensive Cascata Centrale di San Giuseppe, and the well-formed Cascata Zocca are highly prized. More ambitious lines, such as Cascate di Fora, and Cascata degli Specchi also offer a great, comprehensive alpine ice experience.
Ice Climbing Base Course
We offer structured ice climbing base courses designed to teach the fundamentals of ice climbing technique, helping you develop the mental skills and practical judgment necessary for managing risk in frozen terrain. We choose accessible, low-commitment environments, such as the numerous single-pitch ice falls found throughout the valley.
You will learn to coordinate precise crampon placements with efficient ice tool swings to move with balance rather than just strength. We will focus on understanding the medium, teaching you how to evaluate ice quality and how temperature affects your safety on the ice falls.
Beyond movement, we will teach you how to move upwards more securely, from placing ice screws and building anchors to managing ropes in cold conditions.
You will gain crucial instruction on risk management and proper protections spacing, ensuring you develop a structured approach to safety. By the end of the course, you will have moved from simple ascent to understand the fundamentals of frozen terrain.
Ice Climbing Full Immersion
The Ice Climbing Full Immersion is designed to teach the fundamentals of multi-pitch ice climbing while developing the essential mental and practical skills for managing risk in the mountains. We will climb together one of the many legendary multi-pitch ice falls in the valley, such as the Cascata Centrale or the Cascate di Vazzeda. Along the way, we will go into detail on how to assess ice stability based on weather conditions, snow accumulation, and temperature shifts.
During the ascent, you will refine your technique in placing ice screws, selecting the best locations for secure anchors, and mastering rope management in cold conditions. You will also learn the technical precision required to build the classic Abalakov thread for safe rappels. This program is a deep dive into the vertical winter world, moving beyond the basics to give you a complete understanding of multi-pitch logistics and high-altitude judgment.
If you don’t think you are quite ready for a full multi-pitch day, we can start with a focused technique session on a single-pitch fall. Alternatively, you can add an extra day to practice lead climbing transitions and advanced anchor systems
Our courses are always built on a customized approach: whether you are an expert seeking the challenge of steep, technical ice columns or a complete beginner focusing on building foundational skills, we ensure your adventure perfectly aligns with your goals and ability level. With our guidance, you are not just climbing the ice—you are mastering it.

We had fantastic time in Valmalenco! It’s clear that you guys love your valley and know it from the old little villages to the highest peaks. Thanks for organizing everything and your patience when guiding. We are coming back :)
Thank you for your guiding and teaching once again. We had great times exploring your mountains with you! While not as wild as Canada, it’s Europe after all, we really liked that Valmalenco is more rustic than Switzerland or Dolomites. Looking forward to see you for another adventure somewhere!
We hired Stano to plan out and guide us on a travel-trekking trip in Patagonia. While he has not been there before, we had a very smooth and fun trip all around! We trekked 6 days in Torres del Paine Park in Chile and 3 days under Fitzroy in Argentina. Fabulous experience!
With my two daughters, over four winters, we have had magical experiences being guided and coached by Stefano in Valmalenco. His flexibility to deal with a beginner snowboarder to very experienced skier is exceptional. He is a friendly guide, true leader and a fantastic instructor!
I have been on a couple of adventurous trips with my friends guided by Stano. We don’t like to have every detail planned for our vacation as we appreciate getting into some trouble… it’s just more authentic and fun :) We have hiked together in the Dolomites and Valmalenco, and have travelled in Canada and around the Italian island of Sardinia.
