Spigolo Vinci on Pizzo Cengalo 3369m – with a mountain guide
Climb one of the most aesthetic and challenging granite ridges in the entire Masino-Bregaglia range on the boarder between Italy (Val Masino) and Switzerland’s (Val Bregaglia).
Perched on the south face of Pizzo Cengalo, the Spigolo Vinci is a sanctuary of clean, solid rock that stands as a legendary chapter in European mountaineering.
This ascent delivers a world-class alpine experience—one day you are trekking through the lush Val Porcellizzo and the next you are navigating a “crucible” of vertical granite with Piz Badile as your backdrop.
The Spigolo Vinci offers a meditation on balance and nerve, featuring impeccable traditional climbing where the exposure and aesthetic quality rival the great walls of Patagonia.
If you don’t think you are quite ready for a commitment of this scale, we can prepare you with a shorter multi-pitch route in Val di Mello. Alternatively, you can add a preparation day to focus on high-alpine efficiency and movement on technical ridges.
Spigolo Vinci – Pizzo Cengalo
The Spigolo Vinci on Pizzo Cengalo is celebrated as a cornerstone route of the Masino Bregaglia Alps, offering a classic, exhilarating climb up the mountain’s prominent southeast ridge.
This historic line, pioneered by Alfonso Vinci, is defined by its continuous exposure and impeccable rock quality, offering a truly timeless alpine mountaineering experience.
During the ascent, we will navigate technical cracks and airy slabs, relying on traditional protection to master this high-altitude masterpiece. The ascent follows a natural, clean path up solid granite, characterized by consistent engagement that blends easier terrain with sustained, steep pitches.
Day 1
We will meet up in Val Masino (1150m) and after the usual gear check we will start hiking a steep trail that enters the valley. We will slowly gain elevation, to reach the beautiful and lush meadows of Valle Porcellizzo. The trail here flattens here and cross the creek before heading straigh to Rifugio Gianetti.
Night: Rifugio Gianetti (2534m)
Day 2
At sunrise, we will be following the Sentiero Roma in direction to Rifugio Allievi. After few minutes we will be leaving the trail to climb straight up the slope and boulders that take us to the base of the climb.
The climb begins on weathered rock before traversing to gain a distinct dihedral system. Climbers must navigate complex rock features, beginning with weathered rock before traversing into a distinct dihedral and tackling a famous “black corner” defined by large flakes. The climb continues along the sharp ridge, leading to an airy balcony beneath a significant yellow rock wall threaded with cracks. A
fter breaching this barrier, the route moves onto a grey wall marked by clean horizontal flakes, maintaining a high degree of exposure that delivers dramatic, breathtaking views over Val Masino.
The final stage follows the upper ridge towards the summit area, maintaining its exposure and commitment to the very end. The sheer quality of the climbing and the dramatic environment make the Spigolo Vinci a memorable challenge on superb granite for anyone visiting the region.
If you climb to the top of Cengalo the descend is along the Normal route. If you don’t climb to the top, descend with few straight equipped abseils along ta bolted route. Once on the ground we will go back to the Rifugio for restoring the energy and back down to the car.

We had fantastic time in Valmalenco! It’s clear that you guys love your valley and know it from the old little villages to the highest peaks. Thanks for organizing everything and your patience when guiding. We are coming back :)
Thank you for your guiding and teaching once again. We had great times exploring your mountains with you! While not as wild as Canada, it’s Europe after all, we really liked that Valmalenco is more rustic than Switzerland or Dolomites. Looking forward to see you for another adventure somewhere!
We hired Stano to plan out and guide us on a travel-trekking trip in Patagonia. While he has not been there before, we had a very smooth and fun trip all around! We trekked 6 days in Torres del Paine Park in Chile and 3 days under Fitzroy in Argentina. Fabulous experience!
With my two daughters, over four winters, we have had magical experiences being guided and coached by Stefano in Valmalenco. His flexibility to deal with a beginner snowboarder to very experienced skier is exceptional. He is a friendly guide, true leader and a fantastic instructor!
I have been on a couple of adventurous trips with my friends guided by Stano. We don’t like to have every detail planned for our vacation as we appreciate getting into some trouble… it’s just more authentic and fun :) We have hiked together in the Dolomites and Valmalenco, and have travelled in Canada and around the Italian island of Sardinia.
